Document Summary
Lecture 18: alterations of chromosomes keep history in mind. 1875-1890"s--meiosis and mitosis worked out via microscopy and cytology. Thomas hunt morgan: 1933 nobel prize for his discoveries concerning the role of chromosomes in heredity. But solid evidence associating one specific gene with a specific chromosome was missing. Used alleles for wild type (w^+) and mutant type (w) males (fruit flies) To figure out the relationship between the wild type and mutant type alleles. Morgan hypothesized that eye color gene is located on the x chromosome. Shows how trait is linked to sex chromosome. Results provided evidence that a specific gene is carried on a specific chromosome. Genes located on a sex chromosome exhibit unique inheritance patterns. If the allele is recessive then it must be x-linked and no counterpart in the y chromosome to offset the recessive allele. White-eye trait showed only up only in males.
