Urea cycle occurs in mitochondria and cytoplasm (different steps take place in different parts) There"s a question on this on past midterm kind of question he"ll ask on final. Be able to follow a radiolabeled molecule through various cycles. 14c-co 2 is radiolabeled co 2 and within the co 2 , the radiolabeled part is the carbon. When it asked where it ends up, it wasn"t talking about which part of the body. It meant what molecule that it ends up in. The co 2 will be released into either the cytoplasm or mitochondria. Regardless, the co 2 will diffuse out wherever because it can go through the membrane. I notice that the mutant mice are obese. I the mutation is in a cytoplasmic enzyme and i measure the activity of the enzyme. I also measure the amount of fatty acids present in these cells.
