Need for animal model of human amnesia. Animal models are critical to media research - everything we know about disease and organ functions and treatments, etc, come from studying animal models. Same applies to brain research - can"t treat cognitive diseases unless we know how normal brains function. Variability in extent of neurological damage - patient brain damage varies. Variability in learning history - what you"ve learned before affects what you learn later. Advantages of animal models: control extent & timing of damage. Anatomy of the hippocampus: deep inside your brain. 1: sensory, motor, motivational & cognitive processes are intact - hm & ep could read, speak, etc. 3: beyond stm, memory declines rapidly ( faster forgetting ) 4: memory deficit is global - not limited to one type of stimulus; doesn"t matter what kind of stimulus it is, still gets forgotten. 5: graded retrograde impairment: recent memories more impaired than older ones.
