The salton sea: source of water: Runoff from farming: salt content: 25% saltier than the ocean, without runoff water - even saltier. The wildlife issue: major flyway in the west. Gulls, herons, egrets, doves, quail, hawks, and owls: most common in spring and fall, 380 species of birds go through this area. Why so many and so diverse: food in the salton sea. Tilapia and corvina in the millions: crops and stubble in the fields, sometimes people are paid to scare off birds, so they cannot eat crops that have not yet be harvested. Poisons in the salton sea: abundant. Sewage from mexico: amounts exceed those permitted by epa, biomagnification problem. Public lands in the west: bureau of land management (blm) Of 270 million, 180 million acres in west of the u. s: other agencies by comparison.
