Why do we want to study police: are embodiment of government"s exercise of control and authority, represent government mechanism of social control/authority, public exposed more to police than to any other agents of the state. Attitudes toward government are likely to reflect in attitudes toward police. People will start to reject the system (not only the police: reject state authority. Negative perceptions of police erode confidence in legitimacy of system: results in public resistance to police authority. Police behavior has been indicted as igniting incidents of civil unrest and riots during past 50 years. Police instituted for crime control: public satisfaction leads to public be more willing to help police. Efficacy of law enforcement: disapproval of the police may decrease likelihood that citizens will cooperate (police may be seen as agents of suppression)
