Law has historically upheld white supremacy and hierarchies of gender, class, and sexual orientation. Want to take look specifically at institutionalization of race in law through court precedents and public policy. Discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin. Intersectionality theory -> people are more than one identity. Definition = the set of public policies and initiatives designed to help eliminate past and present discrimination based on a number of classifications. Phrase affirmative action first used by president johnson in 1965. Required federal contractors to take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed without regards to their race . No white preference -> equal treatment in context of employment. Extended executive order to address gender as well. Undid jim crow laws and separate but equal doctrine.
