Jurisdiction: (what court has the authority to decide a case) Venue: which court can you sue in- which small claims/which federal court. Pleading: file papers with court explaining your case- what do you expect to prove. Discovery period of time for the parties to examine the other"s evidence. Summary judgment: allowed to file motions with the court- one side may not have a case and motions to dismiss the case. Trial: resolve the dispute in a trial- or settle- most common in civil. Appeal: based on legal error by the court- something went wrong in the trial. Referral of case to district attorney (state crimes) or us attorney (federal crimes) Bodies made up of citizens-- hear testimony and make decision whether there is sufficient evidence to indict the suspect for a crime. Motions to set bail/pretrial release (typically large-most can"t afford) Pretrial diversion (some drug cases are eligible for this- agree to undergo drug treatment for charges to be dropped)
