CRM/LAW C115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Gayle Rubin
Document Summary
Gender can be seen as a force of socialization that operates in the world. Instead of gender being a fixed identity that we take with interactions, it should be seen as the product of those interactions. Candace west and don h. zimmerman argue in their article doing gender (1987), to be a man or a woman, is to perform masculinity or femininity constantly. Men are not loud and rowdy by nature, just because they identify as men it doesn"t give them the right to hurt others or bully. It"s a fact that men tend to likely more engage in physical play compared to girls, but there"s no correlation in being active and causing pain to others. By this gender stereotyping, we"re excusing bad behavior and that"s not fair. A more accurate expression would be boys will be what we expect them to be , because that"s the reality of it.
