Document Summary
Prevalence is the percentage of a population involved in one or more acts of some form of intimate violence in a specified time period. Incidence is the frequency with which acts of some form of intimate violence occur in a specified time period. How frequently does this behavior occur within population during specified period. Involvement can be as a perpetrator or as a victim of such acts. Estimates can be of the prevalence of incidence or victimization. The question about how to measure is unanswerable in any definitive way. We can never know the exact number of perpetrators, victims, & acts of intimate violence. The best we can do is to estimate that number using methods having acceptable standards of reliability & validity. That number is unknown & unknowable because most cases go unreported to any authority figure &/or people do not self-report accurately in surveys. Make knowledge claims based on objective facts.
