Seeing images of carnage caused by shootings too often in media. People are being de-sensitized and numb to atrocity. Recent killings in vegas and predictable debates about gun control. Mental health, availability of guns, uniqueness of us issue, and political environment. Crime= an intentional act or omission to act, neither justified nor excused, that is in violation of criminal law and is punishable by the state. Considered an offense against society as a whole and prosecuted by public officials (civil law=against an individual) Press and public rallying around crime and distinction from criminals. Good people v. bad people -> us v. them mentality. Us side of the equation can bond over the them side. Us side feels righteous and moral in comparison. People held tailgate parties to celebrate that bundy was being executed -> ghoulish enthusiasm w/burgers and t-shirts. In all moral orders, crime serves functions: Put selves in position to be punished by state.
