The mediterranean basin is by far the largest of the mtes and also extends into a continent far further than any other. It has a very complex topography, well described in the text, and this makes rainfall quite varied across the mte. As might be intuitively expected, rainfall is greater in the north and at higher elevations, and lesser in the south (where it is drier on the african side of the med. Portugal, northwestern spain, northern italy, western greece, and southwestern turkey. The most xeric areas are se spain, northern. Egypt and libya are too dry to sustain mte vegetation. Rains are seasonally more variable than in any other mte. October is the wettest in italy but in other places the wettest sites are in winter and spring; autumn and winter; spring; or spring and autumn (note: the summer is, of course, the drought period). California with maximum rainfall in mid-winter is present in coastal north.
