Continental crust has the ability to form mountains, and ocean sits lower. Looking at earthquake and volcanic activity, you can make a good guess about where lithospheric plates are. How or why things happen are explained by: recognizing an unsolved problem, making observations, formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis. A theory is a scientific idea that has passed numerous tests and failed none. Not a single person can say that the theory does not add with evidence. Plate tectonics is the grand unifying theory of geology! Proposed by german meteorologist alfred wegener (1915) He has a lot of observations made to support hypothesis. The continental shelf edges make a better fit. Permian glacial till is found on four continents.
