EDUC 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Social Change, Language Development, Cognitive Development
Document Summary
Sequence of development is the same for all babies, but the timing may be somewhat different. Gross motor development proceeds from head down head/neck to trunk to legs. The cephalocaudal principle - growth begins with the head and then continues downward to the rest of the body. At birth, brain is the size of adult"s brain. By age 2 it will be 70% of adult size. Experience-expectant development: the brain is primed to expect environmental stimuli in order to develop normally during a specific period of time. Visual stimuli is necessary for normal vision development. That stimuli is critical for normal brain development. Language: during the first two years, the brain is sensitive to language stimuli, and this is important for the development of a primary language. It can be learned later, but less efficiently, and may never be normal. Experience-dependent development: the brain is shaped by the stimuli they experience in the world.
