Compared to rapid growth up to age 5, middle childhood growth is slow and steady. Average height increase of 2 per year. Girls tend to be slightly taller than boys. Weight gain of 5-7 lbs. per year. Boys are slightly more muscular and tend to develop more quickly in gross motor skills requiring power or force. Girls tend to develop more quickly in fine motor skills and gross motor skills requiring balance. Malnutrition at this time affects cognitive and social development. Wealthier countries have a greater problem with obesity. In america, obesity is most common among the least affluent groups.
