When the republic was instituted in 1792, the decision was to make 2 january 1792 the beginning of year i of the new era. The revolutionary system was designed in part to remove all religious and royalist influences from the calendar, and was part of a larger attempt at decimalisation in france. Calendar in place for some 12 years, from late 1793 to 1805 (when napoleon bonaparte was crowned emperor, ending the republic). There were twelve months, each divided into three ten-day weeks called d cades. The tenth day, d cadi, replaced sunday as the day of rest and festivity. Each day in the republican calendar was divided into ten hours, each hour into 100 minutes, and each decimal minute into 100 seconds. Vend miaire in french (from french vendange, derived from latin vindemia, "grape harvest"), starting 22, 23, or 24 september.
