In this class we will see that science is not simply objective or neutral. Science and metaphor: example: the body as a machine. Why is the brain the seat of personhood in the west: example: the body at war. Emily martin: ideas about selrf/ non self warfare, and the body as a police state inform the metaphors used to describe the immune system: examole: the egg and the sperm. Martin: when we learn about nature, we are learning about cultural beliefs and practices as if they are a part of nature . Arent raace and gender obvious: no, contemporary notions of race and gender are not obvioius, human variation has been rrecognozed by all people. Four elements: earth, air, fire and water, explained human differaances. Hippocrates: poor soil made greek self reliant, while abundant crops in tropics led to softness and lack of war spirit.
