Lecture 18: emergence of guerilla group trying to find somoza regime (fsln, as life worsens in 1970"s (we have students, workers, peasants, and some business leaders and elite begin to join in opposition to somoza) By the late 60"s somozas force had eliminated fsln almost completely but then revived. Begin to expand and launch attacks fsln in 1974 attacked a somoza party and kidnapped people for ransom. In 1978 somoza forces killed pedro chamorro he was a long time somoza critic (editor of opposition paper known as la prensa) President jimmy carter felt somoza had to do. Fsln storm congress and take hostages ask for money and a broadcast. Fsln started final offensive in june 1979 by july somoza steps down (he flees to miami and then paraguay) He leaves 2 billion dollars of damage, gdp dropped by 25%, bankrupt.
