Lecture 25: the big revolution on a little island - fidel calls grenada this, new jewel movement government positions only open to members. Limited number of personnel to run state. Prime minister maurice bishop- declared it a vanguard revolution (small group) they hold power not sharing it. Bishop felt that the history of repression left society politically unable to run itself. Revolution itself set up censorship and a secret police force. At first reforms were modest private enterprise left alone. Prg did take former prime minister gairy"s property but not widespread expropriation. When prg had a land reform (people with large land forced to lease pieces to people) Prime minister bishop was pragmatic government not in position to run entire economy, he thought it was better to increase investment. New government would try to promote a clothing and furniture industry. It got loans from cuba, libya, britain, soviet union to try to get economy going.
