HISTORY 70B Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Salic Law, Protestantism
Document Summary
Salic law doesn"t disempower queens at all, it just disempowers royal daughters in that they can"t inherit kingdom. Also says that son of a french mother can"t inherit land through mom. So it doesn"t restrict the female powers of a queen. It says that french woman can"t be king because those are male powers running a kingdom is male power. So this restricts rights of women but queenship is a totally different gain. Queenship is about supporting some male either being at its very base (sexual partner of king) or in its more revered standing (mother of royal children) So in england where they don"t have this, matilda was able to pass the throne onto her son whether or not that was a law that happened at that time. So when she goes to war with stephen, she"s asserting that the line of the throne passes through her.
