What challenges to capitalism arose in the mid 19th century. New kinds of production and consumption emerged in the 19th century. New kinds of wage labor were needed. As more workers moved to towns, around factories and mines, new kings of consciousness developed. In the mid 19th century, ideas developed by thinkers interested in social inequality helped to organize these new experiences. The political movements of socialism and communism that emerged would shape world history in the 20th century. 1835 went to bonn to study philosophy and literature. Not just theory of economics but also theory of history. For marx, history is just the result of laws. Dialectical because two forces clash and out of that comes a synthesis or new social structure (capitalism) Materialism because it was about material realities and not ideas. The result would be a true socialist society. Under feudalism, certain families rose to prominence through military service. They retained privileges and control over land.
