One side of frontier is wilderness, unsettled + other side = civilization. Frontiers -> borderlands (not a line but a place) Contested control + cultural contact -> not ruled by one group. Frontiers = an uncivilized, unexplored place (historically) Gender = refers to ideals + norms that people believe go along w/male + female. Social ideals of what it means to be a man or woman. Perspective is important -> understanding european views allows for interpretation of what they see amongst native americans. No native sources talking about their own practices + beliefs. Important to also look @images that portray native americans. Get sense of factual errors -> see european influence + inaccuracies. Sang of sex, rituals of public sexual activity, named natural world after sexual things. Deity of water + male rain god -> sexualized myth. Seeds needed to be planted deep in mother earth"s womb. Rain would sink in deep + cause them to grow.
