Introduction
- how can people cope with memories that they don’t want to bring up
- specifically memories of the revolution + such in Iran
Changes in Iran After Revolution
- loss of kind of basic civility in society
- Persepolis -> scene when going to supermarket
- addresses Marji’s mother as “sister”
- Iranians referred to each other as brother + sister
- became customary during Islamic regime
- wanted to feel like they are one group
- refers to her in familiar pronoun, not formal
- Marji’s mother asks for respect + man says he screws women like her + then
dumps them in the trash
- loss of manners, respect, + civility
- those in power felt entitled
- laws changed in favor of those who were in power
- contrast to Marji’s mother + grandmother’s excitement for revolution
- tears of shock + regret -> questioning how revolution they supported is now
targeting them
- difficult to work through collective Iranian memory

- in this case she got man arrested + Marji finds it funny -> grandmother gets
angry with her
- wanted to avoid getting in trouble for wearing makeup
- gets mad at her since grandfather has been arrested for defending the
innocent
- everyone has a choice -> regardless of restrictions + difficulties that they
face it is not ok to become an oppressor
