Spence"s coventry cathedral and britten"s war requiem, setting up both intra-textual opposition between their own parts and inter-textual contrasts with each other, expressed with enacted both the necessity of forgiveness in the aftermath of war . Refers to the subject matter depicted and depends on the viewer"s recognition of objects that they have seen before. The position of the devil below st. michael represents the layout of the old and new church. The old church is the devil, due to the history of bombings and crucification. About the mourning and lost lives in war. Tenors represent the military, who want the gods to let them rest.
