Language is the partner to the parts of a play. Characters/people: split between high and low, dominant and submissive, reflected in poetry (noble humanity) vs prose (base and considered less human) Stephano, trinculo, and caliban are considered lower characters. Conflict (within and between languages): prospero vs. caliban, main subplot/plot, high and low characters. Language decides nature, quality of island, people claim it through language. Language (both written and spoken) is a partner of empire, supporting its goals. No empire fails to leave its own language behind (prospero). Slave/property: he does make our fire, fetch in our wood, and serves in office that profit us. Prospero acknowledges that he depends on caliban, even though this is not implicit. He would be nothing without caliban and ariel. Prospero manipulates caliban through physical torment, but also through his words by trying to make him speakbut caliban doesn"t say what.
