Airwaves were a public resource for programming: expected to work with the public interests. Representation of marginalized groups on tv: who has access on shaping and influencing what is made available in television. Talk shows and made-for-tv documentaries: aired on local networks, response that by the 1950s there was a spike in these groups, particular areas where one knew you can access an emerging gay subculture. Exclusive focus on men: stereotype said that gay men were harmful to children. Family was one of the causes of homosexuality . Alfred kinsey: challenged ideas that most people were interested in same-sex practices, many people felt between 2 poles where you can osolate between extreme homosexuality and extreme heterosexuality. Activists stress gender normativity: being a normal man and normal woman- activists wanted to distance themselves from these ideas, projecting a gendernormative. American psychiatric association: classified as illness from 1952-1973.
