I&C SCI 11 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Packet Switching, Computer Network, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
Document Summary
Nuts and bolts (basic hardware and software) Internet: computer network connecting millions of devices, traditionally desktops and work-stations, non-traditionally laptops, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, automobiles, security systems, etc. All of these devices are known as hosts or end systems . End systems: all connected through communication links and packet switches. One end system segments the data and includes header bytes to each segment. Packet switch: takes packet arriving from ingoing comm link, forwards packet to outgoing comm link, two prominent types of packet switches. Both forward packets toward destination: route path taken through the network to reach destination. Packet switch networks: similar to transportation networks of highways, roads and intersections. You are moving to a new home. You need to transport all your furniture, but it is too much to carry for one car. Your car + others cars all take different furniture and pack into car. Drive to destination and unpack the furniture.
