World Hunger Organizations • Three major NGOs are leading the fight against world hunger: WFP, FAO, IFAD • Non­Governmental Organization: an international regulatory body that is not a  state • World Food Program: an arm of the UN tasked with getting food to people in  need during emergencies • Food and Agriculture Organization: an arm of the UN tasked with long term  agricultural development • International Fund for Agricultural Development: an arm of the UN tasked with  giving financial support for international food production projects World hunger by the numbers • Each day, 1 in 8 people do not have enough to eat o 842 million people worldwide • US population is 300mil, so almost 3 times the population of our country • While poverty is a major driver, gender discrimination is also a cause of hunger  (women) • Estimated that if women farmers had equal access to resources, world hunger  would be reduced by 150 mil people • Children under 5 yrs are among the worse affected World Hunger by Geography • Most  hungry people in our world is in Asia (over 500 mil) • Highest rates of hunger are
