During our this week’s lecture, professor Matthew talked about the role

of technology in our lives and its connection to sustainability. It was

shocking to realize that technology has become such an integral part of

society, that much of our culture can be deﬁned by it. The possibility that

we have today to access anything from anywhere is thanks to the

advancements in technology. The information age has made our lives

way easier by making everything we do much more efﬁcient. It not only

has improved communication and access to information, but has also

promoted things such as global commerce and trade within other

countries. In regards to sustainability, we also learned that the

advancements in technology have helped us by allowing less physical

labor to be used in high risk imposing workplaces. Jobs that imposed

high risks on human health and lives are now being replaces by

innovative machinery and tools. This has improved many lives by

greatly helping people out not only in the United States, but in less

developed countries as well. All in all, we learned that people of this

generation have beneﬁtted much from this progression; however, during

this lecture we also discussed how technology use has impacted our

lives negatively. We learned how our desire to always be up to date in

regards to technological advancements can be distracting and also

have harmful effects on our health. Most of the products that we use

today, including smartphones and laptops, are thrown out within about

two years. Although some of these products mights eventually be

recycled, most of it is going to waste. During our lecture we were also

asked if we thought the technology that we use on a regular basis tends

to be sustainable or not. Based on the results we saw that most of the

class replied no. This result indicates that most people do not think that

the use of technology is good for our health, nevertheless, we still use it

on daily basis. This shows how we are on a destructive path that is

leading us to a crisis rather than a sustainable world.

Case Study 4: (25 Marks)

Alum Tubes Ltd manufactures aluminium cylinders that are used ina variety of products, such as scuba diving equipment and fireextinguishers. The company has just introduced a performancerelatedpay system in their smallest manufacturing plant. Employees willreceive bonuses, based on their work team exceeding the teamâsperformance targets. At this stage only three of the four workteams will participate in the scheme. If this system works well, itwill be introduced into all of the companyâs plants.

There are four teams, and each team has been given quarterlyperformance targets for (1) time taken in manufacturing cycle time,(2) material cost per unit and (3) production output (number ofunits produced). Two of the work teams are organised sequentially,that is, the output of Team A becomes the input for Team B. Teams Cand D both manufacture their product independently of the otherteams. However, teams C and D do share some equipment with Team B.Team D is not participating in the new performance-related payscheme. Team D has just introduced some new production technologyand therefore management believe the team is facing a steeplearning curve at present with this new technology, and the lack ofknowledge and experience would make it difficult for team D toachieve any performance targets at this stage.

A bonus pool of $10,000 has been set aside each quarter. Thisbonus is to be shared only among each of the participating teamsthat achieves their targets for the quarter and shared equallyamong the members of these successful teams.

The employees are excited by the new scheme. They can only gainby such a system. However, at the end of the second month, tempersstart to fray. Sam Smart, a member of Team B, takes his complaintsto the production manager, Adam Dolittle:

Sam: This new system is just not working. Team A is sabotagingour performance. How can we meet our performance targets when TeamA gives us faulty product to process? âThey have skimped on thequality of materials, so it takes us much longer to complete ourpart of the manufacturing process because of the amount of re-workto fix the products. We have had a 15% increase in the number ofunits we have had to scrap due to materials defects, which reducesthe number of units we can make in a day!. This is made worse whenthe purchasing department orders our material far too late (as theycan purchase materials cheaper if bought in larger quantities, butthis makes delivery slower), so we have to wait around fordeliveries. Also, someone has been leaving the calibrator machinein such a mess, so we waste valuable time resetting the gaugesbefore we can use it. I am sure it is a member of Team C. Thesystem is not fair. The other two teams are making their targetsand we are not- and it is not our fault! Additionally, John Grump,a member of our team, is clearly not working to capacity- and hisrewards will be the same as ours!â

Adam was not sympathetic. He has just had to deal with adelegation from Team D who is upset because they cannot share inthe performance bonuses.

Adam: Calm down Sam. I am sure that you are exaggerating. Theseproblems will iron themselves out over the next few months. It isup to each team to manage its performance. Go away and deal withthese problems.

M&A activity reached a new high in 2015, both globally and in the United Statesâwith large deals leading the way. Asia also reached a new record, with activity for the first time virtually tied with Europe as the second-busiest region for M&A.

By the numbers, more than 7,500 deals with a combined value of over $4.5 trillion had been announced as of this writing on track to exceed 2014 deal volume by 8 percent and deal value by 37 percent, and eclipsing the record of activity set in 2007. North American acquisitions accounted for more than 50 percent of global deals by value, while year-on-year growth of deal value in Asia over the first 11 months of 2015 exceeded the previous 11 months by nearly 60 percent.

But the big story in 2015 is around big deals. Megadealsâthose valued at more than $10 billionâwere up by nearly 130 percent by value year on year during the first 11 months of the year. Large deals, with a value between $5 billion and $10 billion, were up 24 percent, while small deals increased by about 10 percent. Announcement effects for acquirers in large deals, which went positive in 2013 for the first time in our records, dipped only slightly in 2015 as many investors continued to welcome announcements of large deals. Traditionally, such announcement effects have been a poor indicator of a dealâs eventual value. For instance, our analysis of past deals has found no correlation between share-price movement in the days after a deal is announced and a companyâs excess total return to shareholders two years after a deal, when most synergies are captured.

Why do many investors continue to applaud big deals?

It could be a change in the types of deals. In the past, big deals were often seen as tactics to address cost reduction and industry consolidationâand many still are. But today we also see deals where managers and boards are talking about diversification and, for the first time in a long time, about revenueâabout cross-selling and creating new customer opportunities, and about transformation. Some of that has always been part of the rationale for big deals, but given continuing strong announcement effects, it may be that investors are more receptive to it. Companies may also be getting better at integration and capturing deal synergies. In our observation, the discipline, professionalism, and capabilities around integration have certainly improved.
