PP&D 132 Lecture 7: PP&D Week 7

39 views1 pages
During our week 7 lecture we discussed the connection between art and
sustainability. Before this lecture I could not even imagine how art and
sustainability could be related; however, as we discussed in class,
engaging in art makes us more innovative and innovation is at the core
of sustainability. We learned about earthworks and how artists in the
mid-1900s began using actual elements from the earth to create this
new art form. Earthworks depict environmental sustainability by
demonstrating how beautiful nature is in real life. They show us how
each earthwork is only meant to exist for a short period of time; thus,
convincing society that this same idea is happening to our limited
natural resources. It was also surprising to learn how each and every
individual, including ourselves, is an artist whether we realize it or not.
Simple acts such as cooking, designing video games, and drawing
simple pictures can be considered art which makes us all artists since
all of us engage in these type of activities daily. Something that seemed
very saddening to me was the fact that most people think of art as very
important, nevertheless, most of them hardly give it any attention.
During the second half of the class we saw our talented TAs
performance and got the chance to learn about the African culture and
the Yamaya Productions that she is a part of. She also talked about how
students should be able to balance art, school, and career. As students,
we struggle with this because we feel as if we have no time along with
the fact that at times we can be very lazy. Nevertheless, we do not
realize that art art is just a way of living, the way we approach things,
and finally it is the way that we think.
Hello Temitope! Just like you, at first I could not even imagine how art and sustainability
could be related. But as we discussed in class and you reflected in your post, it has to
do with innovation which is at the core of sustainability. It was also surprising to learn
how most people consider art to be very important but they hardly give it any attention.
This to me seemed both interesting and saddening since something that important
should with no doubt receive our attention.
