After birth, umbilical cord is cut and the baby begins to breathe on its own. Before birth, oxygen came from the mother via the cord, but a full- term baby"s lungs are developed to support independent breathing. Evaluates infants" heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, body. Used to assess the health of newborns at 1-5 mins after birth. Score of 0,1, or 2 on each of these 5 health signs color, and reflex irritability. Total score of 7 to 10 indicates healthy newborn. 3 or below signals emergency & warns that the baby might not survive. Weight less than 5 pounds at birth. Very low birth weight newborns weigh less than 3 pounds. Extremely low birth weight newborns weight less than 2 pounds. Not all preterm babies are also low birth weight babies.
