Anoxia: a condition in which the fetus or newborn has an insufficient supply of oxygen. Can occur if the delivery takes too long. After birth, umbilical cord is cut and the baby begins to breathe on its own. Before birth, oxygen came from the mother via the cord, but a full- term baby"s lungs are developed to support independent breathing. Evaluates infants" heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, body. Used to assess the health of newborns at 1-5 mins after birth. Score of 0,1, or 2 on each of these 5 health signs color, and reflex irritability. Total score of 7 to 10 indicates healthy newborn. 3 or below signals emergency & warns that the baby might not survive. Weight less than 5 pounds at birth. Very low birth weight newborns weigh less than 3 pounds. Extremely low birth weight newborns weight less than 2 pounds. Not all preterm babies are also low birth weight babies.
