Birth process: stages of birth, first stage: longest stage. Uterine contractions are 15-20 minutes apart at the beginning & last up to a minute each. Cause woman"s cervix to stretch & open occurring every 2-5 minutes. As stage progresses, contractions come closer together, By the end of this stage, contractions dilate the cervix to an the birth canal. By the time the baby"s head is out of the mother"s body, the contractions come almost every minute & last for about a minute each. With each contraction, the mother bears down hard to push the body out of her body: afterbirth (third stage): placenta, umbilical cord, and other membranes are detached and expelled from the uterus. Shortest stage of the 3, only lasts a few minutes: childbirth setting and attendants.
