Changes in attitudes towards marriage (39% believe that marriage is obsolete) More women (and men) are attending college (2x as many women as 30 years ago, more women earn college degrees narrowing of age gap between genders) Not well understood (observed around the world) Historically 3 year age gap, but decreasing (~2) Attitudes about martial timing (some theories proposed that men provide income, women are economy dependent on men so they marry younger) Variable: a characteristic that varies from individual to individual. Independent variable the factor that the experimenter manipulates -> dependent variable the factor that the experimenter observes. Research method in which an independent variable is manipulated and scores are then measured on the dependent variable. Involves random assignment of respondents to treatment and control group.
