Education: best predicts rate of cognitive decline with age. Intellectual activity: isolated and inactive adults show the most decline. Environmental : stimulating job, stimulating environment after retirement. A move away from the concept of general intelligence . Looked for talents that were universal, biologically based, culturally useful/valued. Talent may develop and change throughout the life span, often at different rates. People who didn"t do well in school may do very well in life because of their intelligences. Different results from cross- sectional and longitudinal studies. Cross- sequential: generational differences explain part of decline (schaie) Same birth cohort tested in different years: experience with tests inflates scores on. Longitudinal: iq stable or increase second test in longitudinal studies (salthouse) Two big categories of intelligence (fluid and crystallized intelligence) Overall patterns: crystallized increases and stabilizes, and then declines in older age; fluid peaks in mid 20s and then declines. Baltes" 4 principles of lifespan development applied to intelligence.
