Somehow physical systems give rise to conscious experiences. Last time looked at neuro-correlates of consciousness (as shown by research) You have physical inputs that come in & body makes physical responses. Saying that you are just a black box. Nothing that needs to be worried about on the inside. Unable to explain a lot of behavior with these methods. Around 1960 -> chomsky showed that behaviorism could not explain language abilities -> one of turning points that ended behaviorism being model for cognition. There is something inside the black box -> have to look at what is going on in the nervous system. Have to have neurons to have conscious experience. Classes of conscious experiences identical to certain patterns/classes of neural activity in the brain. > the neural activity does not cause the experience, it is the same thing. That neural activity is the conscious experience. Saying that they are the same thing.
