Insula receives and integrates somatosensory signals, helping us experience emotion, esp disgust, anger, guilt, and anxiety. Somatosensory system: part of the sensory system concerned with the conscious perception of touch, pressure, pain, temperature, position, movement, and vibration, which arise from the muscles, joints, skin, and fascia. Complex system of sensory neurons and pathways that responds to changes at the surface or inside the body. Involved in subjective awareness of bodily states like sensing your heartbeat, feeling hungry, needing to pee. Plays important role in experiencing the emotion. Damage to this interferes w/ experience of disgust and also recognizing disgust expressions in others. Amygdala processes emotional significance of stimuli and generates immediate reactions. Also associated with emotional learning (as in the dev of classically conditioned fear responses), memory of emotional events, and interpretation of facial expressions of emotion.
