Document Summary

Repeatedly pair a neutral stimulus with unconditioned stimulus which elicits a reflect or unconditioned response. Before conditioning the neutral stimulus does not elicit the response. After repeated pairings formerly neutral stimulus alone does elicit a response. Edward thorndike -> leading psychologist in this field. If a behavior is followed by a reward, the response is likely to occur again. If a behavior is followed by no reward (or punishment) the response is less likely to occur again. Behaviors increase in particular situation or decrease depending on their effects. Had trapdoor that could only be opened if animal pressed foot against lever inside the box. Placed bowl of food right outside of the box. Deprived animals of food & then out them in a box. Animal engages in all kinds of random behaviors. Thorndike repeats the process with the same animals. Result: found that over time cat engaged in fewer behaviors that didn"t allow it to escape.
