Can be both positive & negative emotions associated with an event that make them more memorable. Something that people want to maintain or something that people want to avoid or change. Gordon bower: emotions function like nodes in an associative network of information (schema) More accessible when in the same state as state that you were in your memory. People remember info that matches current emotional state. Tend to remember happy events when you are happy, sad events when you are sad. Current emotion can affect what events come to mind when recalling memories. Participants made to feel happy or sad. Read story containing happy character & sad character. When later asked to recall the story: Asked about which character they thought was the main character & which they related to the most. Feeling happy/sad activates info in memory that is associated with those emotions, making that information more accessible.
