Intelligence is difficult to define formally, but: the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from experience (gottfredson, 1997) Alfred binet: early 1900s, wanted to identify children who needed remedial education. A general capacity that mattered for many tasks: a series of different tests, some verbal and some performance-based, subtests summed together to produce a total score.
