Wanted purge whatever evil had possessed them. *these treatments did not work & only made things worse. Mental disorders believed to be caused by evil spirits -> strategies evolved to find ways to release those evil spirits. 16th century: development of special hospitals for insane (particularly in europe) Early-mid 1900s somatogenic hypothesis popular -> illness as result of disease of body. Treatment focused on treating the body in order to treat mental illness. Used things such as insulin induced comas & lobotomies. *today: brain surgery still used to treat certain disorders like severe epilepsy but not in the crude way they were in the past. People chained to bed & deprived of basic necessities. Essentially warehouses for those with psychiatric illness. Medical doctors -> psychiatrists, neurologists, psychiatric nurses or nurse practitioners. Support/care staff in certain institutions who may not certified. Treatment providers (clinical psychologist, psychiatrists, mft, counselors, clinical social workers, etc. )
