Gives equal weight to behavioral and physiological components of
substance use disorders
Psychoactive Substance abuse: pattern of use that continues
despite knowledge of adverse consequences or drug use in
situations in which it is physically dangerous
DSM-IV (1994): similar and maintains definitions of DSM III
DSM IV TR (2000) text revisions: created diagnostic "orphans" ie none of the
abuse criteria and only 1 or 2 dependence criteria
A problematic pattern of alcohol use leading to clinically significant
impairment or distress, as manifested by as least two of the following,
occurring within a 12 month period
Alcohol Use Disorder:
Specific current severity
Mild: presence of 2-3 symptoms
Moderate: presence of 4-5 symptoms
Severe: presence of 6 or more symptoms
Measuring Substance Use
There are levels of alcohol use that are risky in terms of short/long term health
consequences
NIAA defines at risk drinking as
Consuming more than 4 drinks on any day or 14 drinks per week
for men
Consuming more than three drinks on any day or seven drinks
per week for women

Gin and Tonic: 1.6

Alcohol Use:
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) asks respondents 12+ on
alcohol use
Current alcohol: any use of alcohol in past 30 days
Binge Alcohol use: drinking 5 or more (men) on same occasion on at
least 1 day in past 30 days
Heavy alcohol use: drinking 5 or more drinks on the same occasion on 5
or more days in the past 30 days
