3 vital points about psychological sex differences: Some differences are real but quite small. With a medium difference, of women > average man. Sex differences - biological distinctions of men and women with their physical features. Gender differences - differences that are due to their upbringing/culture/gender norms/generalization. Gender roles: behavior that is culturally expected. Traditionally masculine : assertive, self- reliant, decisive, competitive. Traditionally feminine : warm, sensitive, emotionally expressive, kind. Stereotypes don"t describe people as well as you think. Only 50% of people clearly fit traditional gender role expectations (f = expressive, m = instrumental) 35% are high on both types of traits ( androgynous ) Gender differences may = incompatibility (that makes relationships fail) we like people who are similar to us! Traditional married couples less happy than non-traditional. Ironic that we pressure adherence to traditional roles. Example: women who display being assertive as men = risk for being pushy: 4, 4, 3, 6, 5.
