Drugs can be classified into 2 categories. Agonist - a drug that enhances a neurotransmitter"s activity. Blocks reuptake of ex) dopamine in cocaine. Neurotransmitters are released, but reuptake process is blocked. Antagonist - drug that impedes a neurotransmitter"s activity. Binds themselves to the receptor and block the transmitter. Binds to the sites, but does not do anything. Nervous system - fast, electro-chemical communication system. Endocrine system - slower system that works by secreting hormones into the bloodstream. Spinal cord - transmits signal from the sense organs and muscles that are below the level of the head to the brain. Distributes signal from brain to the rest of the body through the spinal cord. Reflexes - dependent on the spinal cord. Sensory neuron (incoming info) sends signals to the brain, then the brain signals motor neuron (outgoing info) to act on reflexes.
