Preference for playing with members of the same sex. Play preferences tend to be stable over time in terms of activity level, interaction style, and social skills. Share emotions when interacting in a certain situation. If you"re transition a child from one class to a next, it would be beneficial to transition that child with a friend so they have some stability. Attempt to comfort friends when their friends are experiencing pain or injury. Rough and tumble play helps children interpret negative emotions. Parents provide support, serve as rule providers, supervisors. Friendships take on more abstract characteristics over time. Peer input alone does not lead to optimal results. Piaget - viewed peers as a sounding board. But the idea with his theory is that peers would be more influential in shaping cognition.
