Informational support: to understand stressful event better, to point out resources and coping strategies, e. g. advice, guidance, suggestions, useful information. Instrumental support: to provide tangible assistance, service, financial, or other specific aid directly serving a specific person, e. g. money, help with assignment. Emotional support: providing warmth and nurturing, provision of empathy, love, trust, caring, e. g. friendship, affection. Can be multidimensional (emotional + instrumental, informational +emotional) How could social support influence health: main effects hypothesis, one variable has a direct effect on another variable, social support -> health, promotes pos. psychological states -> health-promoting behavior, pos. physiological responses, stress-buffering hypothesis, stressors -> health. ^ social support: eliminates/reduces effects of stressful experiences by altering appraisals and/or coping. Conceptualizing social support: social integration: active participation in social networks, married, neighbors, religious groups, friends, sense of community, identification with social roles. Social integration and mortality: main effects model, social integration directly affects health, promotes pos. psychological states that induce health-promoting responses.
