PSYCH 9A Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Group C Nerve Fiber, Hypnosis, Nociceptor
Document Summary
It is said that humans only have 5 senses; vision, taste, smell and touch. However another one is kinesthesis: the sensation generated by receptors in the muscles, tendons, and joints that inform us of our skeletal movement. Informs us about our movement and the orientations of our body is space. Aristotle believed that all senses from skin were encompassed in broad category of touch. Skin senses: groups of sense, including pressure, warmth, cold ad pain, through which we gain info about our intermediate surroundings. Skin includes distinct types of receptors associated with skin senses, such as pain, pressure and temperature. Skin senses are best example of specificity coding. Some receptors respond to sustained pressure or very low frequency vibration. A second type of receptors respond to faster vibrations. Another type called ruffini ending, respond to sustained downward pressure or stretching of the skin, help us monito and control our finger positions.
