SOCECOL 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Skewness, Design Week, Ethnomethodology
Document Summary
Like stratification but w/o prior info on who makes the criteria. Purposive = seek out people who meet certain criteria. Non-probability samples are choice often based on limited resources, population accessibility, prior information hard to get to, etc. Stratification -> have access to information before sampling. Able to calculate the odds of someone being selected. Implies that you are not looking at a normal curve. Positive/negative -> in what direction is the stretched/longer portion of the curve going. Positive skew = the long tail is going out to higher values on the x-axis. Negative skew = the long tail is headed back towards 0 on the x-axis. Example about se10 quiz scores (see slides) P value = the threshold we choose (usually 10% chance, 5% chance, Can depend on field we are in + the data being looked at. Standard deviation: the degree of observed variance in this distribution. Interpretive research methods data collection and analysis.
