Freud thinks civilization is here to clamp down on our worst drives and instincts. But freud has something to say about locke, rousseau, and hobbes. Homo homini lupus man is a wolf to man . People are aggressive, violent, and will turn on you to benefit themselves. Also in the constrained view; hobbes wants an absolute monarch to keep. Life is nasty, brutish and short the leviathan everyone in line. We were happier with no civilization; happy savage. Revolves around having pleasure and avoiding pain. Happiness through love and sex, and if you don"t have that you are unhappy. Occupations and creative activity could make you happy. Your work is something you do to make you happy and satisfied; pretty capitalist idea who you are described by what you do. Basically diminishing returns of happiness; makes you happy first time, them successively less and less happy.
