Document Summary

Norms are one of the fundamental units of sociological analysis. Having a sociological eye will put familiar things into the forefront of the mind. Looking at the things in front of us and defamiliarize it, questioning our immediate surroundings. Norms are the things that makes a group more than the sum of the members. A social expectation/standard that governs conduct in social situations in which we participate. Norms are also a kind of sentiment shared among people in a group that feel they ought to behave in certain ways. Norms are also a pattern in our minds that set limits for acceptable behavior. Norms are like blueprints for behavior that we carry into specific circumstances. Principles or rules of social life that people are expected to observe. Members of a group ought to behave in certain ways in particular circumstances. Patterns we hold in our minds that set limits for behavior.
