SOCIOL 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Pliers, Desegregation Busing, Confabulation
Document Summary
Maier (1931) how we reason to ourselves : subjects have to try to tie two cords together, but when holding one cord they are unable to reach the other cord. Solution 1: tie the cord to the chair, move the chair towards the other cord, than grabbing the second and tying the two cords together. Solution 2: using an extension cord to connect to two. Solution 3: using the pole to pull one of the cords over. Solution 4: swing one of the ropes towards the second, must tie a weight to the end (participants used pliers to serve as a weight) This was the most difficult to come up with. The experimenter would keep telling the participant to come up with a new solution until they ran out of ideas, and this pendulum one was the toughest for them to think of.
