SOCIOL 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, White Privilege
Document Summary
Nobody questions that individual human beings are different. We use these visual differences to classify people in groups called races. Race: being about different, something that divides us, distinguishes us. The idea of race is that external differences, which are rooted in biology, are linked to internal differences. But there are no clear cut races. Clear cut and distinct races that exist in the world. Biological differences are linked to inner differences such as intelligence, etc. Defining race : a group of people who share a set of characteristics -- typically, though not always, these are physical characteristics -- arnd are believed to share a common bloodline. The idea is that someone can be put into one of these socially approved categories just by looking at them, their external differences alone. Defining racism : belief system that one racial group is inferior to another, some are destined to superiority while others are destined for inferiority: distinct bloodlines and physical types.
